Archbishop Rowan Williams meets Alan Race

The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams visited St.Philip's Church and Centre in Leicester on 22 October and was hosted by the Editor of our journal, Dr Alan Race. At an interactive session with representatives from Leicester's diverse faith communities he spoke of the need to normalise interfaith relations and stop thinking of it as either eccentric or exotic. The example of good practice in local places, he said, was the best antidote to thinking that interfaith work was marginal to the concerns that we all shared – such as the environment, or justice for those who struggle as a result of the financial crisis, or imagining that faiths are automatically at loggerheads with one another. The Archbishop challenged everyone to think outside the box and to reach out to others so that we increase our mutual understanding and reaffirm the dignity of human beings.
